Organization Background

Rakhine is the second poorest state in Myanmar with the needs of developments. For years, Rakhine State has seen several incidents of communal conflicts between Rakhine and Muslim community especially in the northern part of the state. In the end of 2018, an arms-conflict between Arakan Army (AA) and Myanmar Army (Tatmadaw) has created a humanitarian breakdown and the conflict escalated significantly in early 2019. The northern and central townships were mostly affected by the conflict where hundreds of civilians have died; not less than 227,000 people have been displaced and thousands of houses have been burnt down.

All communities from several townships in Rakhine, were facing the crisis of food, shelter, clean water, income sources, livelihood, education opportunities, and many numerous hazards. Damage of crops, loss of livestock, inability to plant due to lack of seeds and investments, and increased presence of landmines and unexploded artilleries in rural areas have decreased the potentiality of local food production which generated the need of immediate humanitarian response in Rakhine.

With the commitment to support vulnerable populations, Green Journey (GJ) was registered in 2019 (Registration nb- 2/RAK/038). Green Journey is currently working in several townships in Northern Rakhine and, as a motivated local NGO, we are looking forward to working hand in hand with national and international organizations in operating the dedicated mission, addressing the identified issues, and at the same time in developing the organization’s capacity.
