Agriculture in Rakhine State is largely rain-fed. The cropping calendar and erratic nature of rainfalls allow a very short period for land preparation for the cropping in the summer, rainy, and winter seasons. Farmers are only focusing only rice production in the rainy season; cash crop production is still not covering the consumption rate of the state. The current high level of post-harvest losses in the state can be partly assigned to the nonavailability of agricultural machines for timely harvesting and primary processing of farms. The low rice production yields are attributed to among others lack of agricultural machinery and established mechanization centers in the state. This means that farmers must have access to agricultural machinery on time in order to prepare their fields.
Green Journey
In 2020, Green Journey has implemented mechanization project in Kyauktaw township in collaboration with GRET. More than 50 conflict vulnerable villages in Kyauktaw have received power tiller and water pumps which have increased the firming - capacity in the area. Green Journey is continuously seeking partners to work hand in hand to improve the agriculture- mechanization sector in Rakhine.
